Top 11 World Cup Goal List

Hello All - Peter here and it's real Peter, not google reader Peter.

Anyway, this list came up on Soccernet and I figured that it might be fun for everyone to search for these goals on youtube to see if you agree/disagree with the list. I think I have seen 5 of these 11 goals, so I am looking forward to seeing the other 6 if they are available on the site.

So yes, I figured this could be a good time-killer if you're looking for something to do for 20 minutes.

  1. I remember a number of these goals.
While looking through YouTube I found another top ten set with actual videos from the BBC.
Of these, the Maradonna v England is my favorite. Some of these goals are good shots but are not under pressure (Josimar) and therefore don't qualify. The Bergkamp goal was just after a direct kick and red card issued to Argentina, two passes from one penalty area to the other to finish with a goal the clip I saw started with Bergkamp receiving the ball, omitting the quick restart and counter attack which is the real genius of the play.
I seem to remember an overhead kick in an overtime game between Germany and ??? in the 82/84 time period. Mark will have to help with that. That goal, while my memory is foggy is my ALL Time fav.

  2. From Pete:
"I did not remember that the red card occurred right before the Bergkamp goal, interesting. That, for me, was one of the two best WC goals I've seen live. A 60-yard pass, on the money, trapped down, flicked around a defender, and deftly put into the far corner with 2 minutes left in a quarter final - perfect. The goal by Maxi Rodriguez against Mexico in 2006 was the other one that was worthy of mention due to timing and quality.

UD - I thought you are referring to Karl Heinz Rummenigge and the semi-final against France in 1982. Through my research and youtubeing, I imagnie that has to be one of the best WC games in history. However, while he did score in extra time of that match, the guy who scored the goal that you are talking about was actually Klaus Fischer (thank you wikipedia)."

  3. Yes a very exciting game. Played before the sudden death rule was in effect, four goals scored in the overtime period. Some of the very best German players were in it, Manny Kalz being my personal favorite. I did get Mark an autographed player card from Karl Heinz Runnemege. He was at a meeting I attended many years later.

ARG/Netherlands Ortega was sent off and Bergkamp scored the winning goal on the ensuing play just before the game was out of time.

I am pretty sure we saw the Saudi goal against Belgium in the 94 cup live. That game was played at RFK. I think I was there but not sure, anybody remember being there?

  4. That game also included the German goalkeeper nearly killing a French striker - the play should have resulted in a send off for either Serious Foul Play (assault) or denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. The decision made? A goal kick.

I'm glad they got rid of the golden goal, I hope we see a 4-goal OT soon, must be very exciting to see that live.
