FIFA: World Cup could not start tomorrow

hmm, this is a concern... hopefully they'll be ready to roll in 4 months

FIFA: World Cup could not start tomorrow: "FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke admits South Africa would not be ready to host the World Cup if the tournament started tomorrow.

  1. It is one thing if the venues are not ready because of grass and other easily fixed items but another if the buildings and roads are not finished.

700,000 unsold seats sounds like a lot, I wonder how many have been sold? When the FIFA Secy General says he won't discount the tickets it is pure hubris for not admitting they made a terrible mistake. It is very difficult to hide a mistake like that anyone remember US v North Korea in RFK?

One other thing, in the early days of international soccer when we started hosting games there were all sorts of policies on what the host needed to provide: separate locker rooms, hot water, towels, but I don't remember any specifications covering the condition of the field. I would be interested to see if FIFA has specs covering a "world cup" field.
