Suarez... discuss

I've been reading a lot of articles/comments about the validity of Uruguay being in the semifinal while Ghana has gone home. Obviously, this discussion has been brought about due to the way the game ended on Friday afternoon. I have pretty strong feelings on this issue, but I wanted to see what the rest of Hunter FC had to say.

The question is simple, did Suarez "cheat"?

  1. The rules prescribe penalties for an intentional hand ball: a red card ejection and a penalty kick. Therefore Suarez did not cheat, he violated the rules.

  2. I agree with dad on this one and julie and I discussed this as well. Suarez broke the rules, did something illegal or any other way you want to call it. But cheating? no.

  3. I read an interesting article making the case for penalty-goals that would award a goal in a situation like this. In this scenario, Ghana would be awarded a penalty-goal and Suarez would be given a yellow card for unintentional hand ball (in response to the case that Suarez acted instinctively).

But yeah, with the rules the way they are, Suarez was punished based on the rules of the game- a PK and a red card.

  4. Suarez intentionally used his hands to prevent a goal. He was immediately sent off and will miss a semi final match in the World Cup. I believe the punishment fits the crime. If the guy steps up and buries the PK like he did five minutes later, we're not considering anything further.
